Winter with a toddler can feel long, but it doesn’t have to feel boring. When cold temperatures keep playgrounds off-limits and cabin fever starts to set in, having a few warm, welcoming places to go can make all the difference. Luckily, Sioux Falls has some wonderful toddler-friendly spots that are free and perfect for short outings, sensory play, and low-pressure exploring.
From indoor play areas to hands-on learning spaces and cozy storytimes, these winter activities are ideal for little ones who love to move, touch, and discover at their own pace. Sometimes you just need to get out of the house for an hour, and these places are a great place to go!

Play at the Toddler Area Inside The Empire Mall
When winter weather makes outdoor playgrounds too chilly, the Children’s Play Area inside the Empire Mall is a perfect indoor break for toddlers. This free soft-play space lets little ones climb, crawl, slide, and interact with other kids while parents watch. It’s especially nice on cold afternoons when you want a warm, open, low-pressure space for energy-burning play. You can also make your way around to the different little play structures the mall has. Make sure to bring some quarters if you want them to move!

Have Fun at Scheels
While Scheels is a store, it is also a great experience! Scheels is included here because its indoor play structure is a local favorite with toddlers and families, and browsing the store is a fun, warm winter activity. Little ones love the play area, and for a small fee adults can treat kids to mini-bowling, a ride on the Ferris wheel, or a visit to the candy store. Even just walking around and pointing out gear and toys is a bright spot on a winter day.
