Happy New Year and 2025 from all of us here at The ‘hood Magazine! January can feel like a fresh start for many of us. It’s a great time to reflect, work on new goals, and prioritize what’s important in the coming year.

It also means another month of fun things ahead for the Sioux Falls Area! Below are just some of the great events and activities to look forward to this month in Sioux Falls.

JANUARY IN THE SIOUX FALLS AREA
DOWNTOWN SIOUX FALLS BURGER BATTLE
All month long, you can enjoy the DTSF Burger Battle. It’s the 12th year for the battle, and it only gets better each year. Enjoy some time downtown while getting some fantastic food. Make sure to vote for your favorite burgers!
TAKE IN A GAME
With the weather being a bit colder, it’s a great time to take in a game! Sioux Falls has both the Sioux Falls Stampede (Hockey) and the Sioux Falls Skyforce (Basketball), with games to take in during the month of January. This month, you can catch the Stampede playing the Chicago Steel on January 3rd for their themed We Hate Winter Night.
For the basketball fans, support the Force on January 17th when they play Osceola Magic.

GET OUTSIDE
Spending time outside in the winter can still be enjoyable! Check out the free classes and open houses offered by the Outdoor Campus or some of the hiking available at area State Parks. Many local and area parks offer free events and classes during the month of January. For all the events offered by the SD Game, Fish, and Parks click here. Getting natural light and exercise can greatly improve your mood and help combat the winter blues.
Since it is the New Year this month, there are several parks nearby that are hosting “First Day Hikes.” Check out their first day hikes at Big Sioux Rec in Brandon or at Good Earth State Park.
If you like running, join the Sioux Falls Parks and Rec for their Frosty Fun Run on January 4th.
Great Bear Ski Valley is open for the season! They have fun events planned all season long. Check out their Lazer Tubing Events scheduled for January 4th, 11th, and 25th this month.
TAKE IN A SHOW
Enjoy the arts this January! Sioux Falls has a thriving arts community that is such a gift for the area.
Come From Away will be at the Washington Pavilion this month on January 7th-9th.
For country music fans, Sammy Kershaw will be in Sioux Falls this month. He will be playing at The Alliance on January 17th.
If you are looking for a date night or want to catch a show with friends, check out Hadestown. The tour will be at the Washington Pavilion January 17th-19th.
FOR THE KIDS AND PETS
The Toughest Show on Wheels is coming to the Denny Sanford Premier Center! January 17th and 18th, enjoy the Toughest Monster Truck Tour. Kids and adults will love this action-packed show. To get tickets and more information, go online here!
The Washington Pavilion hosts First Free Friday every month. This month, Frist Free Friday will be on January 3rd.
For a special and unique storytime experience with your toddler, head over to the Midco Aquatic Center on January 8th for their Swim and Storytime.
For your furry friend, head over to Chick-fil-A Empire Place on January 13th for their Dogs in the Drive-Thru event. The first 100 dogs will get a treat and a toy!
Sioux Falls Parks and Rec are holding their Annual Winter Kids Day on January 18th this year. Head over to Memorial Ice Rink for some free frosty fun!
