When kids outgrow the toddler playground stage, finding parks that still spark their sense of adventure can be a challenge. Older kids often want bigger climbs, more room to roam, and activities that go beyond a simple slide and swing set. Fortunately, the Sioux Falls area has several parks that offer just that.
Now, if a toddler park is what you want to find, we have the list for you! Check out our post about our Favorite Toddler Parks in the Sioux Falls Area.
Sertoma Park
If there’s one park that consistently tops many family favorites lists, it’s Sertoma Park. The massive climbing dome is a hit with elementary and middle-school-aged kids, while multiple playground areas provide plenty of opportunities to challenge themselves. The park also connects to trails and sits next to the Outdoor Campus and Butterfly House, making it easy to turn a park visit into an afternoon adventure.
Tea City Park
The city of Tea upgraded the playground this year! It features a few different play features, ranging in age from toddlers up to older kids. The playground is also in a park that features a pond that you can fish in, a ¾ mile walking trail, a basketball court, and is right next to the swimming pool.
Hayward Park
One of Sioux Falls’ hidden gems for school-aged kids, Hayward Park offers the best of both worlds: a large playground and a splash pad located right next to one another. The playground features equipment that appeals to elementary-aged children who still love to climb, swing, and explore, while the splash pad provides a perfect way to cool off during hot summer afternoons. Families can easily spend several hours here moving between the playground, splash pad, and open areas. It’s an ideal destination for children who may have outgrown toddler-focused parks but still enjoy active outdoor play.
Jacobson Plaza
One of Sioux Falls’ newest attractions, Jacobson Plaza offers much more than a traditional playground. Kids can explore the all-ages playground, cool off at the splash pad during summer, and enjoy the unique skate ribbon that provides fun throughout the year. The location near Falls Park also makes it a great destination for families looking to spend several hours exploring downtown.

Lower Sherman Park
Sherman Park offers plenty of space for active kids who like to run, climb, and explore. With a big playground area, open green spaces, and proximity to the Zoo, it provides opportunities for a full day of family fun. Local parents frequently recommend Sherman Park as a favorite for elementary-aged children.
JFK Elementary Park
The playground at JFK Elementary has become a favorite among local families looking for a fun place for older kids to play. The modern playground features a variety of climbing elements, slides, and challenging equipment that keep elementary-aged children engaged long after they’ve outgrown smaller neighborhood parks. One of the biggest draws is the amount of space available. In addition to the playground itself, families can take advantage of the school’s open fields and hard-surface play areas, giving kids plenty of room to run, play games, ride scooters, or organize an impromptu game of tag.
Pasley Park
Pasley Park combines a large playground with plenty of open space and beautiful river views. Older children enjoy the climbing structures and room to run, while families can take advantage of walking paths and picnic areas nearby.
Terrace Park
Known for its beautiful Japanese Gardens and mature trees, Terrace Park is a great choice for families looking for a mix of play and exploration. Older kids often enjoy walking the park’s paths, exploring the gardens, and spending time in the spacious playground areas.

The Outdoor Campus
Technically not a park, but definitely worth mentioning, the Outdoor Campus offers an outdoor experience that many older kids love. Take a walk along the trails, do a scavenger hunt, and play in their nature play area.
McKennan Park
A Sioux Falls classic, McKennan Park remains a favorite gathering place for families. Beyond the playground, older kids enjoy the open spaces for games, climbing opportunities, and summer concerts in the bandshell area. The new McKennan Park wading pool is also quite the upgrade from the old pool. Older elementary aged kids will find that the wadding pool is still fun for them, making it the perfect location for families with both older kids and younger kids.

Tips for Visiting Parks with Older Kids
As children get older, they often enjoy parks that offer more than playground equipment. Look for parks with trails, climbing features, splash pads, open fields, sports courts, or nearby attractions that allow them to explore, create adventures, and stay active.
