How to Make a Coffee Filter Earth Day Craft:

Materials Needed:

1. Coffee filters

2. Blue and green washable markers

3. Spray bottle filled with water

4. Red paper (or felt, heart stickers, heart stamp, ect.)

5. Scissors

6. Glue

Instructions:

1. Prepare Your Workstation

Lay out all the materials on a flat surface, ensuring that you have enough space for crafting without any clutter. Place a protective cover underneath to catch any stray marks or water droplets. We used a baking sheet.

2. Color the Coffee Filters

Encourage your kids to use blue and green washable markers to color the coffee filters. The idea is to create a vibrant blend of blues and greens, mimicking the colors of our planet. Let them experiment with different shades and patterns to make each “earth” unique.

3. Spray with Water

Once the coffee filters are colored to satisfaction, it’s time to add a magical touch. Using the spray bottle filled with water, lightly mist the colored coffee filters. Watch as the colors blend and spread, creating a beautiful marbled effect reminiscent of Earth’s swirling oceans and lush continents. Allow the coffee filters to dry completely before proceeding to the next step.

The key here is to start small with the water! Don’t drench it or all the marker color will wash away.

4. Cut Out a Heart

While the coffee filters are drying, cut out a small red heart from paper or felt. This heart will symbolize the love and care we have for our planet, serving as the centerpiece of our “earths.”

5. Assemble Your Earths

Once the coffee filters are dry, glue on your heart! At this point you can also write anything you would like on your earth. We picked “Happy Earth Day.”

6. Display and Celebrate

Congratulations! You’ve successfully created your coffee filter Earths. Encourage your kids to proudly display their creations as a reminder of the beauty and wonder of our planet. Use this opportunity to discuss the importance of Earth Day and the small steps we can take to protect and preserve our environment for future generations.

Happy Crafting

Crafting with your kids is not only a fun way to spend quality time together but also an opportunity to instill a sense of appreciation for the world around us. By making these coffee filter Earths, you’re not only fostering creativity but also teaching valuable lessons about environmental stewardship and love for our planet. So gather your supplies, unleash your creativity, and let’s celebrate Earth Day in style!
