5 Spots to Escape the City
The Outdoor Campus
The Outdoor Campus is a favorite for families who love hands-on fun in nature. There are over 2 miles of trails that weave along the backside of The Outdoor campus, along with a pond, and a playscape area. Explore the campus as a family, on your own, or sign up for activities like fishing, archery, or canoeing. Even if you’re just walking the trails, it’s easy to forget you’re in the middle of the city. The Outdoor Campus makes learning about nature feel like an adventure.
Mary Jo Wegner Arboretum
Located on the east side of Sioux Falls, the Arboretum feels like a nature retreat tucked just outside the bustle of the city. Families can wander along wooded trails, explore the beautiful gardens filled with native plants, or stop at the pond to look for frogs and turtles. The site also holds pieces of history from East Sioux Falls, giving kids a chance to learn while they play. A favorite part of the Arboretum for many families is the creek at the base of the park, where you can often find kids playing.

Arrowhead Park
This east-side treasure is a mix of rugged beauty and quiet charm. Known for its quartzite rock formations and open water, Arrowhead Park is perfect for families who enjoy exploring. Trails loop through peaceful natural areas, offering spots to picnic, watch for wildlife, or simply enjoy some downtime together. The water adds a calming touch, and the park’s unique landscape makes it feel more like a getaway destination than a city park.
Great Bear Recreation Area
While many know Great Bear for its skiing, tubing, and winter fun, it’s also a year-round escape for families. During the warmer months, the recreation area opens up to miles of hiking trails that weave through rolling hills and wooded areas. The views at the top are worth the climb, especially in fall when the leaves turn into a colorful backdrop. It’s close to the city but feels like a true adventure, giving families the perfect place to hike, explore, and recharge outdoors.
Legacy Park
On the west side of Sioux Falls, Legacy Park is home to a peaceful natural area that feels miles away from the busy streets nearby. The paved bike trail winds through open prairie grasses and quiet stretches of nature, giving families the chance to enjoy a slower pace. It’s an ideal spot for a stroller walk, a bike ride with kids, or even just a short escape to breathe in some fresh air. Also in Legacy Park you can find one of the FAST (Falls Area Single Track) Mountain Bike Trails.
Whether you’re craving a hike, a picnic, or just a quick break from busy days, these Sioux Falls escapes prove you don’t have to drive far to feel far away. Each one offers its own unique way to slow down, connect as a family, and soak in the beauty of nature.
