Regan Miles, Baltic School District
My son Ayden had Mrs. Miles for his 1st grade teacher 7 years ago and he still talks about how much he enjoyed having her as his teacher. Mrs. Miles’s students are lucky to have her as their teacher. She not only makes learning fun but they also know how much she cares for them. When my son had her for a teacher they had a classmate who had some serious health issues. Mrs. Miles taught this class how to care and they all became one big family that year. She not only taught them what they needed for 2nd grade but more importantly how to love and care for those in need. We will be forever grateful for her kind heart and for being more than just a teacher to her students.
Rachel Rivera, Rosa Parks Elementary
Senora Rivera has helped my son grow so much this year in Spanish. It is so fun to see him excited about school this year and enjoying it. Senora Rivera truly shows that her heart is teaching and she wants to see kids have not only a love for learning but learning in Spanish!
Molli Tarabelsi, Rosa Parks Elementary
Mrs.T is a first year teacher but you would never know it with the relationship she has built with her students. She has made first grade fun in the English class of the Spanish immersion program. I remember one day my son coming home and saying how Mrs. T was breaking every ones ankles in soccer. Which I guess mean she was playing super well. She has help my son be excited for learning and being at school this year.
Rose Ruffinott, Lowell Elementary School
Miss Ruffinott is just an exemplary teacher. She constantly goes above and beyond to not just provide a meaningful education but to prepare and shape young learners to be good people. She is creative with her teaching, always finding ways to engage the students from using pumpkins during science to hands on manipulatives in math. So many resources come directly out of teachers pockets. Miss Ruffinott would be extremely grateful to be awarded with this award.
Heidi Meier, Brandon Inspiration Elementary
Last year my daughter has a condition called Selective mutism. She would not talk in places she was uncomfortable. This resulted in years of not talking to peers or teachers in daycare or school. Meanwhile she was super social at home or with people she knew well. We had a school meeting with My daughters provider, principal, support staff and Mrs.Meier. I could tell how much she cared for all of her students and their success in school. She was willing to work with us and learn ways to try and help our daughter succeed. She was interested in learning more and things to try or not try. Not only did she care about my daughters success but I know she cared about other students as well. Within 1-2 months of that meeting my daughter was talking to peers and teachers and flourishing in school as well as extracurriculars. I strongly believe the school and this teachers support was supportive of this life changing success for my child. This year my other daughter has Mrs. Meier. She is an organized and responsive teacher. Elementary is a tough age to teach and she does it with grace. I have been so impressed with her both years and feel she deserves to be recognized. I know she changes kids lives other than my own.
Hannah Talley, Laura Wildner Elementary
Hannah goes above and beyond every single day in her classroom. She greets each child as if it’s their first day at school with a welcome smile and a hug to ease any anxiety they may have. While she teaches she uses realistic scenarios to help children connect and understand what they are learning. Her heart is pure gold. She has so many students with different abilities but she makes sure to help them in any way that she can or reach out for help if needed.
Tammy Copper-Mosser, Abiding Savior Academy
Tammy’s enthusiasm for education is contagious! Not just for the students, but for the parents as well. She cares about each individual student and supports them to reach their individual goals. She’s interested in each student’s growth and is patient to help them achieve it. She challenges them at a pace that’s right for them. She not only cares about them academically, but she cares about their character – often challenging them with life lessons. We can hear and see Tammy’s influence in our daughter’s life on a daily basis at home – our daughter coaches her little sister, “you can’t say you can’t”… “we can do hard things!”… “you can do it!”. Tammy has helped our daughter believe in herself and has instilled a love of math and reading into her. Our daughter consistently wants to “play school” with her little sister, and I love when she “parrots” Mrs. Cooper-Mosser – always kind, always thoughtful, always encouraging!
and
Mrs. Tammy Cooper-Mosser is deeply in tune with each of her students needs. My daughter is full of joy and confidence and LOVES school because of the atmosphere that Mrs. Cooper-Mosser sets for her classroom. My daughter jumps out of bed every morning, excited to go to school. Mrs. Cooper-Mosser instills 41 years of prolific teaching excellence combined with positively encouraging each student in their worth and all of the kids have such confidence because of the way she values and cares uniquelly for each student.
Megan Peters, Jane Addams Elementary
An elementary teacher working with newcomer students plays a crucial and transformative role in their academic and emotional growth. Megan creates a welcoming and inclusive environment, helping students from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds feel safe and valued. She adapts her teaching strategies to meet the unique needs of each student, using visuals, hands-on activities, and language support to bridge communication gaps. Beyond academics, she nurtures social skills and builds confidence, guiding students through the complexities of adjusting to a new country and school system. Megan’s dedication helps newcomer students not only catch up academically but also thrive in their new community. I have had the privilege of watching Megan build strong relationships with her students, creating a safe and nurturing environment where each one feels seen, heard, and valued. She puts her heart and soul into every aspect of her students’ day, knowing that their time with her is limited before they move on to their home school. Megan is one of the kindest and most compassionate people I have ever met, and I feel truly blessed to have had the opportunity to be part of her teaching journey, as she has been a part of mine!
Katie Machacek, Discovery Elementary
Where to begin? Mrs. Machacek was on maternity leave for the first few weeks of school this year- but she made it a point to be at open house to meet and greet her new students. She has shown up at some of her student’s soccer games and school district events (outside of school hours) to help foster a sense of community. In the classroom, she always seems to be wearing a smile, even though she has some difficult students. She challenges her advanced students to continue to grow in all areas (an example in math, adding digits to their numbers on their worksheets, or asking them to multiply and divide instead of add and subtract). This not only keeps the students engaged, but keeps them eager to learn more and prevents them from getting bored or disruptive. And she does all of this day in and day out, while navigating the first year of being a mother. She is one of a kind, and we are so lucky to have her as a teacher this year!
Mallorie Heidinger, Tea Area Legacy Elementary
Ms. Heidinger is so patient and fun loving. She supports my son in his learning and helps him enjoy going to school each day. As a parent, you want your child to enjoy their days and that is definitely the case this year!
Pamela Ryan, John F. Kennedy Elementary
I am nominating Mrs. Ryan for the Elementary Teacher of the Year award because of her exceptional dedication to her students, creating a vibrant learning environment where every child feels valued and empowered to reach their full potential. She consistently goes above and beyond, tailoring lessons to individual needs, incorporating creative activities, and fostering a strong sense of community within her classroom, which is evident in the positive relationships she builds with each student. My daughter Hayden always wants to go to school and never complains about her day. It is noticeable that Mrs. Ryan loves her students and puts everything she has into being the best teacher she can be for her students.
Kitu Leveau, Horizon Harrisburg Elementary
My son is very high energy and sometimes quick to anger. She has continued to show patience and outstanding passion as a 2nd grade teacher. She’s such a pure soul.
Molly Wilson, John Harris Elementary
Molly is an incredible gift to our John Harris community and families. She has the biggest heart, and she is always willing to go the extra mile to support her students and coworkers. I have the privilege of teaching alongside of Molly this year, and she has made me a better teacher in her kindness and willingness to share incredible resources and ideas. Thank you Molly for ALL you do! We love you!
Angie Olson, Fred Assam Elementary School
Mrs. Olson is making a positive impact on her Fred Assam Elementary students’ lives each day. She brings positivity and fun to the classroom while challenging them to learn and grow to be great students. Each month students set individual goals to reach by the end of the month, such as meeting 50% of their AR goal or completing math facts. Once the goal is reached they get to ring the bell which for the 2nd graders is the best. Mrs. Olson genuinely cares for her students, she planned a sports themed party for the boys of her class to come to school and play games, color, eat snacks and deepen the bonds; the following week she hosted a painting party for the girls complete with tea time. She isn’t just impacting them academically, but also teaching them how to be good humans through instilling values of teamwork, encouragement, and friendship. She is truly making the future a brighter place each day in her classroom.
and
It is with great enthusiasm that I nominate Angie Olson for teacher of the year award. She exemplifies the true essence of an educator. Not only by imparting knowledge but by shaping young minds into compassionate, confident individuals. What sets Mrs. Olson apart is her ability to make every student feel seen, heard and valued. In her classroom students are not just learners; they are unique individuals with their own strengths, perspectives and potential. Mrs. Olson fosters an environment where each child is celebrated for who they are. Beyond academics Mrs. Olson instills the importance of kindness, respect, and integrity. Lessons in math, science and reading are taught with enthusiasm but she also intertwines these lessons with discussions about character, empathy and making a difference in the world. Students leave her class not only with a deeper understanding of their subjects but also with the confidence to be themselves, and courage to stand up for what is right and the empathy to support those around them. Mrs. Olson is more than just an educator she is a mentor, a role model and an inspiration. For these reasons I wholeheartedly nominate Angie Olson for teacher of the year. She is truly deserving of this honor, as her impact extends far beyond the classroom, shaping future generations in the most meaningful way possible.
And
Our family is beyond grateful for Mrs. Olson. She goes above and beyond for her students, makes learning fun, and knows her students. She is all around an engaging educator which is why I am nominating her for the 2025 educator of the year.
Her creativity and love for teaching help build confidence, for my daughter Greta, this has been a game changer and confidence booster. Mrs. Olson provides a safe, fun and exciting school experience which allows kids to thrive, they want to be there.
I know, without a doubt, the “Mrs. Olson experience” as I like to call it, will have a positive impact on my daughters future. The foundation for any student has to be strong, I know my daughter will leave Mrs. Olson’s 2nd grade class this year with a strong and sturdy foundation, ready for the next thing. What a gift that teachers like Mrs. Olson exist.
I can tell she shows up everyday, even on the weekends, with one thing on her mind, the children and how she will make their world brighter. Please consider Mrs. Olson for the 2025 educator of the year. She goes far beyond simply delivering information, she is the definition of an educator.
and
Mrs. Olson has been an amazing teacher from day 1 of the 2nd grade. My son Logan is excited about learning and has grown leaps and bounds intellectually this year. Mrs. Olson truly cares about her students in a way I have never seen before.
and
Angie was born to be a teacher. She displays an unwavering dedication to her students and a genuine passion for fostering a love of learning. Angie’s love for both teaching and her students, is evident in everything she does. She always goes above and beyond for her students, including giving of her personal time and money, planning special activities for her kiddos, providing a positive learning environment, and being an extraordinary role model.
Regardless of ability level, she ensures each student feels both challenged and supported where they’re at. She instills lifelong skills and confidence in her students that stretch much further than the classroom setting. She is making a lifelong impact on her students that often goes unrecognized. The amount that she pours into our children is truly a blessing and we couldn’t be more lucky to have her as our teacher! Rowan lights up every time she talks about Mrs. Olson, and couldn’t imagine 2nd grade without her! Thank you for all you do, Angie. You’re simply the best!
and
I want to nominate Mrs. Olson for the Best Teacher Award because she is truly one of a kind. She has been my son’s teacher twice now, and I’ve seen firsthand how much she pours into her students. She doesn’t just teach—she invests in them.
Even when school isn’t in session, she finds ways to connect with her students through events and check-ins, showing them that she genuinely cares beyond the classroom. She constantly pushes them to be their best, not just academically but as people. Her dedication, encouragement, and unwavering support make all the difference.
Mrs. Olson isn’t just a teacher—she’s a mentor, a role model, and a cheerleader for every child in her class. We are so grateful for her, and she absolutely deserves this recognition!
and
There are so many good things to point out about Mrs. Olson – it’s hard to narrow it down to just a few! The feeling you get when you know someone is meant to be a teacher? You can just see it in their heart? That is the feeling that Mrs. Olson gives her students and their families. I’m sure her students will have memories of her for the rest of their lives and remember not only all of the things that she taught them, but how valued she makes them feel. She gives so much of her own time and effort, outside of the classroom, to shine a light on her students. She hosts special parties and events for them. She is incredibly encouraging and continually helping kids reach their full potential. Incoming students to 2nd grade want to have her, and my daughter was so excited when she found out she would be in Mrs. Olson’s class. I know there are a lot of challenges for schools and teachers these days, but you would never know it by talking with Mrs. Olson. She always has such a great attitude and it is obvious that she truly cares about her students. We are lucky to have her as a teacher for our daughter and in the school district. I truly hope she is considered for this as she is incredibly deserving.
and
Mrs. Olson is a remarkable example of what an educator should be! She is compassionate, kind, and helpful. She loves each child in her classroom as her own. My son feels safe, loved, and cared for in Mrs. Olson’s classroom. He cannot say enough good things about her, and neither can I!
Shari Reed, Florence Elementary School
I’m nominating Mrs. Shari Reed because she is very down to earth and is amazing teacher. She has a way with her students that no other teacher I’ve seen has. She goes above and beyond for her students by giving them a comfortable learning environment. She has impacted my sons life in only a few short months of being in school. Those reasons are helping him academically. He struggles a lot in school as he’s on an IEP and even though he’s on one she shows whatever she is teaching to the other students she shows him a different way he’ll understand. She has not only impacted my sons Grahsen’s life but she has mine as well. She reaches out to me and lets me know how he’s doing in school and also will reach out to me about his challenges too. But not only that but ultimately contributing to a sense of confidence and peace of mind about my sons well-being at school. Mrs. Reed is by far one of the most important teachers in my sons life and these are a few reasons why I’m nominating her.
Shelby Dosch, West Central Elementary-Hartford
Miss Dosch has been a true blessing for our daughter Jensyn. Kindergarten to 1st grade was a huge struggle for Jensyn, but with hard work, we slowly made progress throughout the year. I was so nervous wondering how 2nd grade would go, and so was Jensyn. We received the classroom/teacher list shortly before the 2024-2025 school year started. The school let us know Miss Dosch was new to the school district as well as new to teaching. I honestly didn’t know how that would go knowing Jensyn needed extra help the previous school year. Jensyn was super nervous as well because she didn’t get the teacher she was hoping for. I told her this could be a great thing and she will be getting the fun new teacher! We met her at the open house and Jensyn was super excited and definitely clicked with her! This instantly helped ease her anxiety.
Throughout the year, Miss Dosch has been incredibly patient and kind with Jensyn and the entire class. She is an amazing person and wonderful addition to the West Central School district. She is so deserving of this award and would be a great kick off to start her 2nd year teaching. We appreciate her so much and would love for her to receive this award! She has such great ideas for her classroom. She has given Jensyn (and I’m sure others in her class) the confidence to excel in both academics and socially. Anytime we feel Jensyn is slipping backwards, I communicate it with Miss Dosch and she chats with Jensyn about it and we figure out the problem and almost instantly see a positive change. We can’t thank her enough and I’m hoping our 6 year old is lucky enough to get her as a teacher as well!!
Cassie Sabers, Tea Legacy
I’m nominating Ms. Sabers as educator of the year because she provides a safe and fun way to learning to our 3rd graders in Tea. My daughter looks forward to going to school and has brought up her reading level this year tremendously!! She makes sure all the kids are on track for learning and keeps the parents in contact as to what we can be doing at home as well. She not only tells us, but also provides worksheets and material for us to help our children. She gives incentives for the kids with fun days such as glow day, but still ensures that they are learning at the same time. She is very appreciated and her hard work does not go unnoticed!! I am very grateful to have my daughter in her class!!
Eliana Gutierrez, Sonia Sotomayor Elementary
Sra. Gutierrez is a teacher who deserves every bit of recognition possible. She goes beyond teaching reading, writing, and math…. she shapes each child she teaches character, confidence, and develops a love for learning. A third-grade teacher is someone who is transitioning a students learning to read into reading to learn. I believe third grade is a key developmental year because children are being to recognize their strengths and challenges- therefore a caring teacher is essential. The teacher helps navigate them through these with gentle encouragement, and figures out what each child needs- whether it be a thoughtful smile when things are rough or an “atta boy” when they accomplish something they have had trouble with. They make students feel safe and help them navigate risks of trying new things or encouraging them to take on a challenge.
Eliana Gutierrez forms a deep connection with each student and helps them form deeper relationships with their peers as well. She is organized and respected. She is the foundation of how a student treats others because she sets a good example for each student. She goes above the normal academic needs by teaching communication, teamwork, and problem-solving each child will need in their future.
Additionally, Sra Gutierrez brings excitement to each lesson and sparks curiosity in her students. She is passionate about every subject whether it is science, art, history, or math and inspires children to explore all subjects with excitement beyond the classroom. She is planting the seeds needed to become lifelong learners.
I remember many of my elementary school teachers- some for good, some not so good. I also remember those that encouraged me to be my best and those that saw a potential in me that others did not. My favorites were the ones that pushed me, even though I may not have enjoyed it at the time. All teachers are important, just as each grade is important, but not all teaching is the same. Eliana Gutierrez goes above and beyond a parents expectations by her immeasurable energy. While some lessons may seems simple at the time, the confidence, curiosity, and compassion she shows each students lasts a lifetime and is leaving a lasting mark. Simple put, Eliana Gutierrez meets and exceeds the teaching profession standards. She is a guide, a mentor, and is shaping kids academic growth AND personal development. Most importantly she has the respect of each parent and child she impacts.
Kellie Plucker, JFK Elementary
My son is now in 4th grade and speaks about his 3rd grade teacher often. He still says she was his favorite. She was amazing at getting kids to respect her and others- she managed his anxiety (and mine) amazingly. We won the lottery with 3rd grade teachers. She was always so encouraging
Elsa Flores-Morales, Sonia Sotomayor
Sra Flores has been a teacher for two of my daughters, and she is currently our daughter, Lauren’s, 3rd grade teacher. Sra Flores goes above and beyond for her students every day. Her organization is something that stands out more than any and all teachers we have encountered. She has shown dedication to having expectations of her students from day one that allow them to live up to their full potential. She is positive and finds unique ways to encourage the students daily as well. She has implemented ways to allow groups of students responsibilities in the classroom, and they can then earn unique options for seating and recognition weekly. She has jobs for students and will encourage them to identify ways they can be improving daily. One of my favorite strategies that Sra Flores implements is natural ways for students to engage in self-reflection. She will ask the students to set goals for themselves and rate themselves on how they are doing to meet their goals. This is such an important skill that I truly appreciate her working on with the students at an early age.
Our daughter Lauren has thrived in her room with improved standardized testing score and academic skills but also socially. It is clear that Lauren feels included and important. Sra Flores remembers important things that Lauren is engaging in, and she will consistently check in with her. She has helped Lauren’s confidence grow this year as well as challenged her appropriately! We have seen such gains, and I am so thankful for the positive influence she has been in Lauren’s life and our lives overall!
Coleman Peterson, Discovery Elementary
Certain teachers come into your lives, and you realize (almost immediately) that you’ve been touched by greatness. Mr. Peterson’s classroom shines with a light like no other.
There hardly seems like adequate words – but if I had to sum up Mr. Coleman Peterson …
Learning from Mr. Peterson is so much more than checking boxes and standardized tests. His students are more than just numbers and data.
Mr. Peterson has eyes to see our kids for who they are. (Even more than meets the eye!) Their gifts. Their quirks. What makes them tick. He truly, without fail, meets every student where they are, strives to get to each kids’ level – everything from emotional intelligence to curriculum is presented in a way that clicks with the students. (And gets them EXCITED to learn more – see what other capabilities are hidden inside of them!)
His heart is kind. His patience is abounding.
He fills these impressionable young minds with exposure to the beauty in the (what can certainly feel like a dark) world. Colors. Imagination. The days are filled with captivating lessons. Learning math equations by making pyramids in the front of the classroom. Teaching Science with hands-on experiments – and even a classroom Leopard Geco (named Clementine!). Hours that fly by because learning is done through enriching play. Music, movement, costumes, dancing, the arts – a place where every single child knows they are worthy. Has no question they belong.
As a parent, I have witnessed the creative education that takes place inside of room 305. It’s books that come alive from the magical way Mr. Peterson reads and teaches them. It’s family meals where the conversations are facts about Freedom Fighters and details about Children’s Books written by greats like Kristi Yamaguchi. A desire to fill the dinner table with every single spark (from days) that lights a fire for school.
Mr. Peterson is something special. His desire for the kids to succeed isn’t about his reflection. It’s about genuine care for the students. It’s providing them a safe place to land. Courage to ask questions. Dig deeper. Fall without failure. Coleman Peterson is willing to step outside the boxes (that teachers are being forced into) to make education a core experience, an impact that lasts a lifetime. It’s helping every single kid (mine included!) unleash their potential.
I could tell story after story about the car rides home after school. My son, with a plastered smile on his face, talking a mile a minute. Sharing every detail of every part of his day. His overflowing cup. Mr. Peterson and the many ways he builds him up.
I could tell about the night I sat by Mr. Peterson’s grandmother (coincidentally) at a play, and she beamed with pride telling of the selfless way cares about his classroom. A reiterated reminder that we hit the jackpot with Mr. Peterson as our teacher. The words are endless. Because Mr. Peterson’s influences are endless. He is shaping our youngest learners. And our world is a better place because of it. Because of him. Mr. Coleman Peterson – I pray he never wonders what his teaching is doing to students. Teacher of the Year or not … he’s our favorite teacher for a lifetime!
Kelsey Foxhoven, Tea Area Venture
I am honored to nominate Mrs. Foxhoven for the Teacher of the Year award. As a parent, I have witnessed firsthand the incredible impact she has had on my child, Bella, and her classmates. This has truly been the best school year ever for Bella—her words, not just mine—and that is a testament to the dedication, kindness, and passion Mrs. Foxhoven brings to the classroom every single day.
Mrs. Foxhoven is not just a teacher; she is an inspiration. She takes the time to understand each child, recognizing their individual needs and ensuring they are equipped with the right knowledge and strategies to succeed. Her ability to engage and connect with her students is remarkable. She fosters a love for learning that makes her classroom a place of encouragement, curiosity, and growth.
Beyond her role as an educator, she is a mentor who instills confidence and a love for education in her students. Her kindness and thoughtfulness create a safe, welcoming environment where every child feels valued and empowered. She understands that learning is not one-size-fits-all, and she adapts her teaching to help each student flourish in their own way.
Bella comes home every day excited about what she has learned, eager to share her experiences, and full of enthusiasm for school—something every parent hopes for their child. Mrs. Foxhoven has truly made a lasting difference, not only in Bella’s education but in her confidence and joy for learning.
For all these reasons and more, I wholeheartedly believe that Mrs. Foxhoven deserves to be recognized as Teacher of the Year. She exemplifies everything an outstanding educator should be, and we are so grateful for her positive influence in our child’s life.
Julie Samp, Abiding Savior Academy
Mrs. Samp makes learning fun. She teaches students to see the beauty in knowledge to love learning. She continually finds ways to engage her students in learning. She helps them navigate not only the scholastic challenges of 4th grade, but also the life challenges. My daughter recently asked for time to go slower. When I asked her why, she said “because Mrs. Samp is such a good teacher I want the year to go slower so I can keep learning from her.” That says it all.
Becky Munsch, Fred Assam Elementary
I am nominating Mrs. Munsch for the 2025 Educator and Child Care Provider of the Year award because of her exceptional ability to connect with students and foster a supportive, encouraging, and dynamic learning environment. Mrs. Munsch goes above and beyond to not only teach academic concepts but also nurture emotional growth, creativity, and resilience in their students.
What sets Mrs. Munsch apart is her genuine passion for education and her unwavering commitment to each child’s success. She takes the time to understand every child’s unique needs, learning style, and interests, ensuring that no student is left behind. Whether it’s through personalized lessons, extra help outside of class, or simply taking a moment to listen to a child’s concerns, Mrs. Munsch makes every student feel valued and empowered to reach their fullest potential.
Mrs. Munsch has had a profound impact on my daughter’s life. My child has not only grown academically under her guidance but has also developed a love for learning that I believe will last a lifetime. The kindness and encouragement Mrs. Munsch shows every day creates a safe and positive space where my child feels excited and confident about school.
Her ability to build strong relationships with both students and parents truly sets her apart as a leader in education. She actively communicates and collaborates with families, ensuring that all students have the support they need to succeed both in and out of the classroom.
In short, Mrs. Munsh is an educator who inspires, uplifts, and makes a lasting impact on the lives of their students. She is a true asset to our community and deserves to be recognized for her tireless dedication to fostering growth, confidence, and a love for learning in the young minds they shape every day.
Jenna Englehart, Harrisburg Endeavor Elementary
Jenna Englehardt is a wonderful human being. She makes every kid feel loved and wanted at school. Due to this, the kids in her class flourish academically. Mrs. Englehart makes them feel seen and loved. My two kids love her and I will be forever grateful for helping them find a love for learning.
Hannah Larson, Harrisburg Liberty Elementary
I’m nominating Hannah because she has made me the proudest aunt ever. She is finishing up her senior year at USD as a student teacher at Liberty Elementary in Harrisburg and is hoping for a fulltime position in the same school district after graduation. Hannah has the biggest heart and cares for each of her students deeply. She is planning to finish out the school year with “her kids” even though she isn’t required to for school. And she is already working on personalized notes for each one of them to give to them at the end of the school year. She will touch many children’s lives and they will be so much better for it because of her generosity, kindness, and compassion. I’m very lucky to call her my niece and her students will benefit greatly from being able to call her Miss Larson.
Janna Aukes, Sioux Falls Christian
Mrs. Aukes has been a true joy for my little girl in TK. She goes above and beyond to be sure her students have fun and understand the importance of faith and family.
McKayla Hasche, Centrol Lyon Community School District
Mrs. Hasche has been one of the biggest blessings in our life this year. She teaches our daughter’s kindergarten class and I’ve observed her in action many times. She has such a wonderful was with the students. She is calm, the room is organized and welcoming. She greets kids as they arrive, she tells them goodbye at the end of the day. Her class is very much thriving, and it’s because of her. She is intuitive in recognizing students that struggle, and challenging those who excel. Her communication with families is top-notch. We LOVE her so much!
Brittany Prinsen, Discovery Elementary
Mrs. Prinsen has been such a blessing to our daughter. We have witnessed tremendous growth academically and socially this year. Our daughter talks so highly of Mrs. Prinsen and loves going to school. Mrs. Prinsen goes out of her way to provide clear communication and fosters parent involvement.
Sheila Pike, All City at Jane Addams
I am proud to nominate Mrs. Pike for her outstanding work as a kindergarten teacher. All three of my children had the privilege of being in her class, and each of them benefited immensely from her unique and dedicated approach to teaching.
Mrs. Pike has a remarkable ability to teach the curriculum in engaging, hands-on ways that make learning feel like play. Through activities like play dough, chalkboards, puzzles, and blocks, she introduces literacy in a way that captivates young learners. She also incorporates music, using songs to reinforce key concepts like seasons, spelling, and math facts, which makes learning both fun and memorable.
What truly sets Mrs. Pike apart is her unwavering love for each student. She takes the time to get to know each child and ensures that their individual needs are met, whether academic, social, or emotional. Her classroom is a place where students not only grow intellectually but also thrive in a nurturing environment where they are valued for who they are.
Mrs. Pike also fosters leadership skills in her students, giving them opportunities to take on important roles in the classroom, such as leading the line, leading the morning song, and even leading lessons at the smart board. These opportunities help children build confidence and a sense of responsibility.
Jerrid Van Sloten, Brandon Valley Elementary
Mr. VanSloten has been incredibly helpful and understanding with my daughters transition to public school. She is a very high energy child and he is able to keep her busy and makes school enjoyable. My daughter talks endlessly about the fun games that they play and it has been truly amazing how much she has learned over the last 101 days. He has been a true blessing and we are grateful for him.
and
Mr. Van Sloten has instilled the love of learning into my youngest. He has also helped with my special needs son when he started school. He shows so much compassion for his students and acknowledges their struggles. He spotted very early in the school year my youngest had struggles with her speech and asked us if we wanted to have her checked by the speech therapist.
and
First he makes it obvious how much he loves his job and enjoys working with his students. He goes all out on theme days, my daughter comes home every day with a new story about what he did or said that day that was funny. He’s a teacher that makes school so much more fun and exciting and I think kids work and learn best from teachers like him!
Holly Peterson, Tea Area Centure Elementary
I am honored to nominate Holly Peterson for this well-deserved Educator of the Year Award. As my both of my son’s Kindergarten teachers, she has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to not only academic excellence but also the emotional, social, and mental well-being of her students. She is a compassionate leader, an unwavering advocate for children, and a true inspiration in the classroom.
Mrs. Peterson goes above and beyond every single day to create a nurturing and engaging learning environment where children feel safe, valued, and excited to learn. She understands that education is not just about teaching letters and numbers—it’s about fostering confidence, resilience, and a love for learning that will stay with her students for a lifetime.
What makes her truly special is her ability to see each child as an individual, meeting them where they are at and helping them grow in ways that go beyond traditional academics. She has a remarkable ability to support children emotionally, helping them navigate challenges with patience and kindness. Her dedication extends beyond the classroom—she collaborates with families, provides guidance, and ensures that every child has the resources and encouragement they need to succeed.
Despite all she does, Mrs. Peterson would never seek recognition for herself. She simply pours her heart into her work because she believes in the power of education and the importance of uplifting young minds. That is precisely why she deserves this honor—because her impact is immeasurable, and her devotion to children deserves to be celebrated.
Abby Kerkaert, Horizon Elementary
Mrs. Kerkaert goes above and beyond as an educator in many ways. Not only does she offer to assist parents with ensuring all children in her class have any “extras” when it comes to fun things at school (t-shirts for the 100th day to decorate, money for a class trip, etc.), but she instills this mentality of caring and being a good friend in her students. She’s not only there to teach, but understands that the students in her class may all need a slightly different approach on some things to make it work for them. When it’s necessary to make an adjustment or modification she does so without missing a beat or making it uncomfortable for anyone, like it’s just second nature to her. Where some struggle to work with special needs children in class, she incorporates tactics to ensure everyone feels equally part of the group and no one is left out.
My daughter has had an amazing year so far, and I truly believe it’s due to Mrs. Kerkaert’s huge heart. The love she has for her students is obvious in all that she does, and they see it! Calista has a big focus on being a good friend, as do the other students, which I witnessed as I was teaching JA in their class. They’re all quick to share and help one another. Calista looks forward to school each day and always has something fun to report back on each day. All of this, I’m sure, is due to the way her teacher approaches things each day.
If Abby Kerkaert isn’t the definition of what an educator should be, I’m not sure what is.

Shannon spends countless hours adapting, creating and researching strategies to help the students she works with be successful! Shannon’s making an incredible impact on the lives of students with vision challenges!
Heather Groos, SEE School
Heather is a Director at the SEE School in Brandon, SD. She is an amazing leader and a hands-on educator for children, parents, and teachers at the Center as well as early childhood education students attending Southeast Technical College. Let me tell you why I believe that Heather would be a great recipient of the Educator of the Year 2025.
There are so many qualities that define a leader in today’s world, but simply stated, Heather knows how to build relationships. She is passionate about her work with children and families, as she has been in the field of early education for over 25 years. She has developed her skills throughout the years, by working directly in the classroom for many years and then continued to take on various roles and became a leader in Child Care with directing as her current position. This is quite an accomplishment!
Heather’s leadership skills are noteworthy. She takes quality early education very seriously and works hard to build programs that children thrive in, families feel safe and secure in and that employees are proud to represent. Her compassion for others drives her intentions in the decisions she makes daily. I have yet, in all the years that I have worked alongside Heather, or partnered with her in the industry, heard anyone who does not respect and admire Heather’s commitment to children, families, and staff.
In my current role, I am consistently asking Heather for assistance to develop the next generation of early childhood educators. She always responds with an “absolutely, I would love to help” approach. She assists college students in observations, curriculum implementation, practicum opportunities in the classroom, leadership practicum experiences, offers hands-on mock interviewing practice, and serves on the Southeast Technical College Early Childhood Advisory Committee. She provides mentorship, suggestions for
improvement, and the most valuable lesson to all the early childhood students, she provides them with professional knowledge and best practices in the field.
Heather is so deserving of this award. As a humble leader in the field of early education, she demonstrates a strong work ethic, dedication, and respect and can be seen as an agent for change to better the workforce of early education.
Heather is the first one to give credit to others for the quality program she runs, but do not be tricked, it is her leadership skills, enthusiasm for the profession, and loyalty to the staff that makes the SEE School valuable to children and families.
It is my honor, and privilege to nominate Heather Groos for this award.
Baronica Duarte, Abiding Savior Academy
Mrs. Baronica’s title is Executive Assistant at the school, but she is the nexus for the school. She is quick to step into any role that is needed. She handles stressful situations (student sickness, fire alarms, etc) with amazing calmness and kindness. No matter how busy she is (and she is very busy), she always has time for students and teachers. The school runs smoothly because of Mrs. Baronica.
Sara Karpen, Tea Area Venture Elementary
Miss Karpen brings so much joy to Venture. She’s gotten students excited about reading again. She takes the extra time to make sure my child is getting what she needs while at school. She truly loves and cares about all her students, and always has a positive attitude. She makes the library a fun and engaging place, and my daughter wakes up so excited for school on Wednesdays, because she knows it’s library day. I also know she spends much of her time in the day helping out with other duties or in other classrooms, and puts in a lot of time and effort to give all her students the best experience.
Angie DeBruin, Freedom Elementary
Angie isn’t a certified teacher, but a teacher in her own way. I recently learned that she went to college to be a teacher, but changed her major so she could be with her dying father. But yet she still found a way to work in a school, and help everyone! She is one of the lunch ladies! She goes above and beyond constantly. She always has a bright welcoming smile, and helps brighten their days. It could be something as simple as a hug, fist bump, to teaching the kids their lunch number codes in English or Spanish. But her biggest lesson she’s currently teaching staff and learners, is perseverance and positivity! She was diagnosed with a rare cancer, went through radiation treatments after school this last fall. She even helped her coworkers keep up with decorating the kitchen, when she was unable to work. And after a few weeks, she returned…with her same smile and positivity! She has also donated extra clothes for the nurse to give/use as needed. She didn’t hesitate to help custodial every day after school, or during the summer. I know there is so much more, but have a hard time putting it all into words! She is seriously one of a kind, and it shows!
Amy Clark, Laura Wilder Elementary
Although I do not have children, I have witnessed the impact Mrs. Clark makes on her colleagues, student teachers, and students.
I am writing to nominate Amy Clark for Teacher of the Year in recognition of her outstanding contributions as our elementary physical education teacher. Mrs. Clark exemplifies excellence in education through her innovative approach, dedication to student development, and remarkable impact on our school community.
Mrs. Clark’s commitment to education extends beyond her classroom. As a respected figure among physical education teachers statewide, she actively shapes the next generation of educators by mentoring student teachers, sharing her expertise and passion for teaching. Her willingness to guide future teachers demonstrates both her leadership and dedication to advancing physical education.
In the gymnasium, Mrs. Clark creates an environment where every child feels valued and capable. She organizes creative dress-up days that bring joy and inclusivity to the school atmosphere, fostering a sense of belonging among students. These initiatives reflect her understanding that physical education is not just about movement—it’s about building confidence and creating positive experiences that students carry throughout their lives.
As a mother of a two-year-old, Mrs. Clark brings a unique perspective to her teaching. However, long before becoming a parent, she treated every student as her own, demonstrating genuine care for their physical and emotional well-being. Her approach to teaching focuses on building students’ confidence through physical education, understanding that self-assurance in movement can translate to success in all areas of life.
Mara Colter, Cleveland Elementary
Other than this amazing educator being my mom, there are plenty of reasons why she has impacted my life and others. Her commitment and involvement in her students’ lives is unmatched. Being a teacher is more than educating. Being a teacher is also making sure that their day went alright, everything at home is going okay, and noticing any issues that could impact learning. Her dedication and kindness make her an incredible teacher and role model for all of those that meet her. For the past twenty years, she has left an impact on hundreds of students. Some still reach out to her and updated her on their lives. The mutual care and respect from both a child and teacher is truly beautiful. I believe Mara Colter embodies what it means to be a kind, lovable, successful teacher.
Dena DenHerder, Lincoln School (Yankton)
