Connecting South Dakotans to quality resources
SDSU Extension is the outreach arm of our state’s land grant, South Dakota State University. Our experts offer resources to help you manage essentials for daily living. In addition to the experts and faculty based on the SDSU campus in Brookings, we have regional centers in Aberdeen, Lemmon, Mitchell, Pierre, Sioux Falls, Watertown, Rapid City and Winner.
SDSU Extension organizes outreach across four program areas: Agriculture and Natural Resources; Family, Food and Wellness; Community Vitality; and 4-H Youth Development. Our research-based information provides everyone from farmers, ranchers, agri-business people, communities, families and youth with the tools they need to succeed. Specific educational initiatives under these four program areas include:
Agriculture and Natural Resources
Agriculture is a complex industry. Experts in precision agriculture, crops, conservation, horticulture, soil health, livestock, animal health and other targeted areas help producers improve profitability and conserve their natural resources.
SDSU Extension state and field specialists have partnerships with producers and organizations to conduct real-world on-farm research to answer practical questions surrounding production agriculture, the adoption of best management practices and new technologies.
4-H
SDSU Extension 4-H is a youth development program where young people learn by doing. Youth complete hands-on projects in areas like health, science, agriculture and citizenship. Through these programs, participants learn life skills and leadership while building community ties with other participants and program volunteers.
We recognize that the youth of today are our future leaders and what they learn and experience in 4-H will help them develop into contributing citizens who will give back to their communities in the future. To learn more or enroll, visit our website.
Community Vitality
SDSU Extension Community Vitality is a prominent leader in empowering South Dakotans with the motivation, knowledge and skills to create stronger communities. Our national network of resources, backed by experiences, research and data, give us the tools to build capacity in leaders, offer continuous learning opportunities and provide coaching directly to South Dakotans and their communities.
Family, Food and Wellness
We help South Dakotans develop healthy habits they can maintain their entire lives. Our experts help train volunteers and connect citizens with resources for older adults; improved access to local, healthful foods and wellness opportunities; mental health; and personal finance.
