Rainy days in the Sioux Falls area don’t have to mean bored kids and endless screen time. In fact, a little drizzle is the perfect excuse to slow down, explore somewhere new, or try an activity you might not otherwise make time for.

Whether you’ve got toddlers, big kids, or a mix of both, here are some of the best ways to turn a gray day into a fun family memory.

Indoor Play Places to Burn Energy

When kids need to move, these spots are lifesavers.

  • Wings Gymnastics: Tons of space to bounce, fly, and spring into some rainy day fun.
  • Sky Zone Trampoline Park: Wall-to-wall trampolines, foam pits, and high-energy fun for all ages.
  • 605 Ninja: This place was made for adventurous kids! Their open gym time is perfect for older kids.
  • Stones Coffee and Play: A favorite for younger kids (babies and toddlers love it) with space for parents to relax with some coffee, too.
  • Midco Aquatic Center: As long as there is no thunderstorm, take the kids to the pool! Who cares about the rain outside when they can splash inside.
  • Westside Rec: Burn off some energy in the gym, take a swim, and get ready for the soon to be open indoor playground!

Tip: On rainy days, we sometimes see local businesses post on their social media that they are adding extra open play time because of the weather!

Explore, Learn & Play

Perfect for curious kids who like to discover something new.

  • Washington Pavilion: A must-visit with hands-on exhibits, the Kirby Science Discovery Center, and rotating exhibits.
  • The Siouxland Heritage Museums: A rainy day is the perfect chance to check out something you may have overlooked in Sioux Falls. The Siouxland Heritage Museums are perfect for older kids in particular and are free to visit!
  • The Butterfly House: A great place to visit on a cold and rainy day. Check out the aquarium animals and enjoy a warm stroll through the butterfly house, which is warm whatever the weather!
  • Siouxland Libraries: Cozy corners, storytimes, and plenty of space to unwind. Plus, it’s always free!

Family-Friendly Food Stops

Sometimes the easiest win? Changing up your scenery with a treat.

  • Grab donuts from a local donut shop and make it a cozy morning outing.
  • Visit a local coffee shop like Coffea, The Breaks,  Zooks in Tea, or Lava’s in Harrisburg.
  • Coffee not your thing? Visit SoDak Soda to find your new favorite soda combination.
  • Make it a whole afternoon downtown! Visit the Washington Pavilion and walk over to Josiah’s for a tasty lunch out.
  • Turn lunch into an experience at Pizza Ranch, where kids can enjoy the arcade after eating. It’s lunch plus an activity, perfect!

Get Creative Together

Rainy days are perfect for slowing down and making something.

  • Head over to the AR Workshop or AMC Collective to check out what current creations you can make.
  • Pick out a paint-your-own project at Color Me Mine.
  • Visit the children’s art studio at the Washington Pavilion! They have tons of supplies to make amazing creations. The children’s art studio is great for families of all ages. Younger kids love playing with the different toys around the room while crafty kids can sit and create.
  • Or stay home and set up a “rainy day craft station” with paper, glue, and whatever you already have on hand.

Splash Outside

If it’s a nice enough rainy day, take it outside! Get on the raincoats, rain boots, and take the kids splashing outdoors. Here are some ideas of where to enjoy a rainy walk

  • Your Neighborhood! Stick to your home area if you have younger kids or kiddos who you don’t think will love a longer walk in the rain.
  • The Outdoor Campus has both trails around it as well as an entry point to the Sioux Falls Bike Trail.
  • Nearby State Parks: Good Earth State Park, The Big Sioux Rec Area, and Lake Alvin are all close choices.

Tip: Make sure to pack some towels and extra clothing in your car if you drive somewhere.

Simple At-Home Rainy Day Wins

Don’t want to leave the house? Some of the best memories happen right at home.

  • Build a blanket fort and read books together
  • Have a family movie marathon with popcorn
  • Bake something simple (muffins, cookies, or even homemade pizza)
  • Create a “Yes Day” with a few pre-approved fun choices
  • Do a puzzle or start a family game tournament
  • Play a family board game (check out our favorites here)

Make the Most of the Moment

Rainy days can feel long, but they’re also an opportunity. A chance to slow down, reconnect, and say “yes” to something simple and fun.

So the next time the forecast looks gloomy, don’t stress. Pick an idea, gather the kids, and turn it into a day they’ll remember.
