Why does alcohol affect me differently in perimenopause?
During perimenopause, estrogen and progesterone fluctuate unpredictably. Alcohol amplifies those swings by increasing estrogen levels and impairing liver detoxification. The result? More hot flashes, mood changes, breast tenderness, and heavier cycles.
Does alcohol affect sleep and weight?
Yes. Alcohol disrupts REM sleep, raises nighttime cortisol, and destabilizes blood sugar. This can worsen night sweats, 3 a.m. waking, anxiety, and abdominal weight gain—already common in this transition.
Is it harmful from a functional wellness perspective?
Alcohol increases inflammation, stresses the liver, disrupts the gut microbiome, and depletes key nutrients. Perimenopause narrows your resilience window, so even moderate intake can intensify symptoms.
