Brookings

About 55 minutes north of Sioux Falls

Brookings is an easy fall escape when you want a day that mixes outdoor fun, kid-friendly attractions, and a little small-town exploring.

Spend some time at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota, where kids can explore hands-on exhibits and let their imaginations run wild. Then head outside to enjoy the changing leaves at Dakota Nature Park, a 135-acre park with trails, wetlands, and plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife.

If you’re visiting on a nice fall day, leave some time to wander downtown, grab a seasonal drink or treat, and explore the local shops. Fall also brings plenty of SDSU Jackrabbit spirit to town, making a football game another fun way to spend a fall Saturday.

Yankton

About 1 hour 15 minutes southwest of Sioux Falls

For a fall day trip that feels a little more like a getaway, head to Yankton.

The Missouri River and Lewis and Clark Recreation Area make this a beautiful place to spend a fall afternoon outdoors. Take a hike, explore the trails, have a picnic, or simply enjoy the scenery along the water. Biking the paved trail near the water is always a family favorite. Yankton also has plenty of history to explore, with museums, historic sites, and a charming downtown area.

For fun in Yankton, make sure to take a look at Mazing Acres. This fall festival destination is open on weekends and is filled with fall fun.

Vermillion

About 1 hour 15 minutes south of Sioux Falls

Vermillion is a great choice when you want your fall adventure to include a little learning along with your fun.

The National Music Museum is home to an impressive collection of musical instruments from around the world, while the W.H. Over Museum offers natural history and cultural exhibits that can turn a day trip into an unexpected learning adventure.

When the weather cooperates, head outside to explore Spirit Mound Historic Prairie, a historic landscape that Lewis and Clark visited during their expedition.

Garretson & Palisades

About 30 minutes northeast of Sioux Falls

You don’t have to drive far to feel like you’ve left town.

Head to Garretson for an afternoon of exploring Palisades State Park, where Split Rock Creek winds between dramatic Sioux quartzite cliffs. Some formations rise as high as 50 feet, making this a particularly memorable place for a family hike.

Fall is an especially beautiful time to visit, when the surrounding trees add color to the rocky landscape. Pack a picnic, wear shoes that can handle a trail, and let the kids explore.

Then head into Garretson to check out the Devil’s Gulch, where legend has it that Jesse James jumped his horse over the chasm.

Newton Hills & Canton

About 30–40 minutes south of Sioux Falls

If your idea of a perfect fall day involves colorful trees, hiking, and plenty of fresh air, head south.

Newton Hills State Park is one of the best nearby places to experience fall foliage. The heavily wooded park feels distinctly different from the surrounding prairie and offers opportunities for hiking, wildlife watching and exploring. More than 200 species of birds visit the area throughout the year, and fall is a particularly beautiful time to explore.

After your hike, continue into Canton for lunch or a little small-town exploring before heading back toward Sioux Falls.

Madison & Lake Herman

About 50 minutes northwest of Sioux Falls

For a slower-paced fall day, point the car toward Madison.

Lake Herman State Park is a beautiful place to spend an autumn afternoon, with opportunities for hiking, wildlife watching, fishing, biking, and picnicking. It’s the kind of destination where you don’t necessarily need a long list of activities. Bring lunch, let the kids explore and enjoy the changing scenery.

Then head into Madison for a treat, browse the downtown area, or make the drive home as the sun starts to go down.

Make the Most of Your Fall Day Trip

You don’t need a perfectly planned itinerary to make a family road trip memorable. In fact, some of the best fall adventures are the ones where you leave a little room for spontaneity!

Before you go:

Homestead Orchard

Location: Parker, SD (about 30 mins from Sioux Falls)

Homestead Orchard in Parker, SD offers a homey feel for picking up apples and other local/area goods. They offer a wide variety of fall favorites. 

Ocheda Orchard

Location: Worthington, MN (about 1 hour away from Sioux Falls)

Ocheda Orchard is a family owned orchard that specializes in MN apple varieties, along with varieties in their own breeding program. They offer you-pick and pre-packaged apples. They also have pumpkins, squash, and gourds. 

Prairie Blush Orchards

Location: Lake Norden, SD (about 1 ½ hours away from Sioux Falls)

This family Orchard has both pre-picked and you-pick apples for purchase. This family farm has some delicious varieties available and also has a pumpkin patch in the fall. There is a country store open during the weekends with other local goods and vendors. 

The Rustic Iron

Location: Vesta, MN (about 2 hours from Sioux Falls) 

This family run farm is a true treat! Formally, the Rustic Iron was known as Holmberg Orchard. This orchard is a perfect fall haven for families. There are tons of different kids activities to enjoy, along with the apples! They have a jumping pillow, hayrides, ball pit, and more. Plus, it’s free!

End of summer means County Fair Season! As summer unfolds, we start to remember that summer days don’t last forever. But there are still some huge summertime events to look forward to at the end of summer. Discover the magic found in a county fair! Admire the hard work of local 4-H kids, eat some delicious food, check out the lights and rides of Midway, and take in some amazing entertainment!

There are several county fairs in the area for your family to enjoy near the Sioux Falls Area. If you are looking for things to do, we highly recommend a county fair. During the day a county fair is a perfect place for a fun family day. Check out the animals, take in some rides, walk through the vendors, and spend time in the educational buildings (we promise they make education very fun!). A county fair is also the perfect place for a girl’s night or date night! Check out one of the many concerts or cheer along with a demolition derby.

Aberdeen, SD might be a smaller town (still one of the largest in SD!), but it packs a big punch for visitors! Find out why we think it’s a great choice for a weekend trip from the Sioux Falls Area, especially if you are a family with kids around that 0-13 range!

Stops Along the Way

Brookings

• Children’s Museum of South Dakota
  This is such a well done children’s museum and very much worth the stop. Kids can dig for dinosaur bones, play in a child-sized grocery store, climb through interactive exhibits, and run wild outside in the Prairie play area — complete with a giant T. Rex.
• McCrory Gardens
  A beautiful place for the whole family to stretch their legs. The carefully landscaped gardens are filled with seasonal flowers, trees, and plants. Kids enjoy exploring the winding paths while parents appreciate the calm and beauty of nature.
• SDSU Dairy Bar
  No road trip is complete without ice cream, and South Dakota State University is famous for its homemade flavors. Stop in and grab a cone before continuing your drive.

Watertown

• Bramble Park Zoo
  This family-friendly zoo is just the right size for a stop. It’s a very walkable and relaxing zoo, with plenty of animals and play areas. The playground and picnic areas make it easy to spend a couple of hours here before hitting the road again.
• Redlin Art Center
  Free and open to the public, the Redlin Art Center showcases the work of artist Terry Redlin. Even if your kids aren’t art buffs, the beautiful grounds outside are perfect for a quick stretch and photo op.
• Lake Kampeska
  If the weather’s nice, Lake Kampeska is a scenic stop for a picnic or a quick splash at the beach. It’s a local favorite for fishing, boating, and swimming.

Small-Town Stop: The Purple Cow

Between Watertown and Aberdeen, you’ll pass through the town of Waubay, where you’ll find The Purple Cow — a charming roadside spot for ice cream. It’s the kind of stop that makes a road trip memorable.

Things to Do in Aberdeen

Storybook Land and the Land of Oz

One of the biggest draws in Aberdeen, Storybook Land brings fairytales to life. This free park is a true wonder for kiddos of all ages. We think that this is especially magical for those up to 13 (though kids of all ages will have fun). Families can wander through themed play areas featuring Humpty Dumpty, the Three Little Pigs, and more. The castle, train ride, and Land of Oz are must-dos. It’s whimsical, imaginative, and completely free — which makes it even better. Storybook Land features several great playground areas, tons of awesome slides, and more. They also have a visitors area, gift shop, food, and a nursing mothers’ room with AC. 

They do have 7 rides at Storybook Land that currently cost $3 a ride. There is a small roller coaster, a train that rides around the park, a balloon ride, a carousel, spinning tea cups, a smaller train ride, and a barn ride that shakes.

Storybook Land is open during the summer months. Make sure to check the Storybook Land website for exact dates and hours! 

Wylie Park

Located right next to Storybook Land, Wylie Park is an attraction all on its own. This sprawling park includes a lake with paddleboats and swimming, mini golf with Thunder Road, bike trails, the wildlife zoo, a campground, and playgrounds. It’s the perfect spot to let kids run and play, or to enjoy a picnic lunch as a family.

Allevity Entertainment

Allevity is a one-stop spot for family fun in Aberdeen. The arcade is a favorite, with everything from nostalgic classics to the high-energy games that let kids (and adults!) rack up tickets for fun prizes. Beyond the arcade, you’ll find laser tag, mini bowling, virtual reality, and spinning bumper cars— giving families plenty of options to burn off energy and make memories together. 

The Arboretum and Botanical Gardens

For a dose of natural beauty, visit the Aberdeen Arboretum. It’s a peaceful place for a family walk, with labeled trees, plants, and gardens to explore. There is a large playground area as well! Bring along some snacks and enjoy a quiet break outdoors. 

Aberdeen Aquatic Center

If your trip is in the summer, plan to cool off at the Aquatic Center. With water slides, a lazy river, and splash areas, it’s designed for all ages. We especially love that they have a sand play area, complete with water tables, for those little ones who don’t love to get splashed. 

Twist Cone

A trip to Aberdeen isn’t complete without a stop at The Twist Cone, a local favorite for sweet treats. Known for its classic soft-serve cones and creative flavor twists, this spot is the perfect place to cool down after a day of exploring. Kids will love the colorful dipped cones, while parents can enjoy everything from malts to sundaes. Affordable, nostalgic, and delicious, Twist Cone is a must-visit for families looking to add a little sweetness to their adventure.

Thunder Road Aberdeen

For families with older kids or teens, Thunder Road is a hit. Thunder Road Aberdeen is located inside of Wylie Park and features a mini-golf area, go-karts, bumper boats, a euro bungy, and a laser maze. 

Dacotah Prairie Museum

Located in downtown Aberdeen, this museum is a great way to mix in some learning with your family fun. With exhibits on local history, Native American culture, and interactive displays, it’s both educational and entertaining.

Camping Near the Sioux Falls Area

Big Sioux Recreation Area

Located just a short drive from Sioux Falls, the Big Sioux Recreation Area is a haven for nature lovers and camping enthusiasts. Here’s why it’s a favorite:

Camping Facilities

• Campsites: The park offers both tent and RV camping with electric hookups. The sites are well-maintained and spacious, providing a comfortable camping experience.
• Cabins: For those who prefer a bit more comfort, the park has cozy cabins equipped with basic amenities.

Activities

• Hiking and Biking: The park boasts miles of scenic trails that wind through woodlands and along the Big Sioux River. These trails are perfect for hiking, biking, and wildlife spotting.
• Fishing and Boating: The river provides excellent fishing opportunities.  Kayaking and canoeing are also popular activities.
• Picnicking and Playgrounds: Families can enjoy picnicking in designated areas and kids will love the playgrounds.

Newton Hills State Park

A bit further out, Newton Hills State Park is a gem in the South Dakota state park system. Nestled in the rolling hills, this park offers a more rugged and immersive nature experience.

• Campsites: Newton Hills offers a variety of campsites, including tent sites, RV sites with full hookups, and group campsites. The sites are surrounded by lush forest, providing a sense of seclusion and peace.

• Hiking and Horseback Riding: The park’s extensive trail system caters to both hikers and horseback riders. The trails offer breathtaking views and the chance to encounter local wildlife.
• Water Activities: Lake Lakota is the centerpiece of Newton Hills, perfect for swimming, fishing, and boating. The park also rents out paddle boats and kayaks. Make sure to check the water levels before going out. Lake Lakota may be low. 
• Seasonal Events: Throughout the year, the park hosts various events, such as outdoor concerts, educational programs, and more.

Palisades State Park

For those who appreciate dramatic landscapes and unique geological formations, Palisades State Park is a must-visit. Located about 20 miles northeast of Sioux Falls, this park is known for its stunning pink quartzite cliffs and scenic views.

• Campsites: The park offers both basic and electric campsites, suitable for tents and RVs. The sites are located in a beautiful wooded area, providing shade and a sense of privacy.
• Cabins: There are also rustic cabins available for rent, offering a cozy and comfortable alternative to traditional camping.

Activities

• Rock Climbing: The quartzite cliffs attract rock climbers from all over. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced climber, the park offers routes for all skill levels. Please remember to only climb if you are experienced enough to do so! 
• Hiking: Several trails wind through the park, offering spectacular views of Split Rock Creek and the surrounding cliffs.
• Fishing and Boating: The creek is great for fishing, with plenty of spots to cast a line. Canoeing and kayaking are also popular ways to explore the water.

Lake Vermillion Recreation Area

Just 30 miles west of Sioux Falls, Lake Vermillion Recreation Area offers a perfect blend of water-based recreation and traditional camping activities.

• Campsites: The park features modern campsites with electric hookups and access to clean restrooms and showers. There are also primitive sites for those looking for a more rustic experience.
• Camping Cabins: For a comfortable stay, consider one of the camping cabins that come with beds, heating, and air conditioning.

Activities

• Water Sports: Lake Vermillion is ideal for swimming, boating, and water skiing. The park has a boat ramp for easy access to the water.
• Fishing: The lake is stocked with walleye, northern pike, and other fish species, making it a popular spot for anglers.
• Hiking and Bird Watching: Trails around the lake provide great opportunities for hiking and bird watching, with a chance to see a variety of local and migratory birds.

Oakwood Lakes State Park

Just over an hour north of Sioux Falls you can find Oakwood Lakes State Park (just west of Brookings). These glacier lakes state park is perfect for those who love the water. 

Camping Facilities

• Campsites: The park features modern campsites with electric hookups and access to clean restrooms and showers. They also offer horse camping spots and non-electric tent spots. 
• Camping Cabins: For a comfortable stay, stay in one of the cabins. 

Activities

• Water Sports: Oakwood Lakes is perfect for those who want to swim, boat, or fish. You can even rent out water sport items from the camp office. 
• Fishing: These glacier lakes are perfect for fishing with your family. 
• Hiking and History: Trails provide great hiking all over the park, along with the different historical points to see. 

Lake Herman State Park

Just an hour away from Sioux Falls is Lake Herman State Park. This State Park is near Lake Madison (which has plenty of outdoor recreation available as well). Lake Herman is a slower pace then Lake Madison and perfect for those wanting a more relaxing camping adventure. 

Camping Facilities

• Campsites: Lake Herman State Park offers tent camping. You can choose both a non-electric or an electric site. 
• Cabins: There are also rustic cabins available for rent.

Activities

• Water Activities: Lake Herman offers swimming, boating, and fishing. You can check-out canoes and kayaks from the state park office. 
• Hiking and Cross-Country Skiing: Several trails wind through the park, perfect for a summertime hike or a winter ski. 
• Historical Points of Interest: See the cabin where the early settlers lived when they first came to Lake Herman. 

Lake Pahoja Recreation Area 

About a 30 min drive from Sioux Falls, and just over the border in Iowa, you can find Lake Pahoja Recreation Area. This beautiful area offers year-round recreation and plenty of camping opportunities.  

Camping Facilities

• Campsites: You can find first-come-first-serve electric sites. A few sites have water hook-ups as well. There are bathrooms in the campground. 
• Cabins: Lake Pahoja has several modern cabins to enjoy with bathrooms, sinks, and refrigerators. You can also rent larger lodges for big groups. 

Activities

• Water Activities: Lake Pahoja offers fishing, boating, and a swimming beach for your family to enjoy. 
• Hiking: Enjoy a walk around the lake and let your children stop at the multiple playground. Or bring a volleyball for a game of sand volleyball. 

Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park Sioux Falls

You don’t need to go far for camping fun! For a camping adventure a little closer to home, check out Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Brandon, SD. 

Camping Facilities

• Campsites: They offer plenty of RV sites with extra amenities, or bring your tent! 
• Cabins: There are modern cabins that you can stay in along with a home just up from the property.  

Activities

• Plenty of Attractions: Enjoy a game of mini gold, jump on the jumping pillow, splash in the outdoor pool, or play a game of gaga ball. There are plenty of activities for your family to enjoy 
• Programming: Yogi Bear has themed weeks for your family to join in on. Experience a camping experience that’s a bit more like family camp!

Camping with children can be a rewarding and memorable experience. Here are some tips to ensure a smooth trip:

• Plan Ahead: Choose a campsite that offers amenities suitable for children, such as clean restrooms, showers, and nearby activities.
• Pack Wisely: Bring plenty of snacks, water, and kid-friendly gear. Don’t forget items like insect repellent, sunscreen, and a first-aid kit.
• Stay Safe: Teach your kids about safety in the outdoors, including staying close to the campsite, respecting wildlife, and following trail markers.
