Maybe your kiddos want safe alternatives for fireworks (we have some great ideas for you), or you want to learn more about how to allow them to participate in the 4th fun. While little people do require some thought before jumping into the fun, they can still participate in a fun and safe holiday!

Here are some ideas for fun activities, safety measures, tips on dealing with loud noises, and kid-friendly firework alternatives to help make your family’s 4th of July memorable and enjoyable.

Outdoor Games

  • Sack Races: Organize a sack race with patriotic-themed sacks.
  • Water Balloon Toss: Fill balloons with water and let kids toss them to each other, trying not to drop them. After the game, allow full-on water balloon fun. For a festive touch, get some red, white, and blue balloons
  • Treasure Hunt: Hide small patriotic-themed items (flags, stars, etc.) around the yard for a fun treasure hunt.

Cooking Together

  • Mini Fruit Pizza Cookies: Make these delicious fruit pizza cookies with blueberries and strawberries for a patriotic spin!
  • Layered Drinks: Create fun, layered drinks using cranberry juice, blue sports drink, and clear soda.

  • Attend an Event: Attend a local 4th of July Program to learn and celebrate the day with the community.

Fireworks: Safety, Alternatives, and how to Handle Loud Noises

Fireworks Safety

  • Distance:  Watch fireworks from a safe distance. Keep kids far enough away to avoid any risk of injury.
  • Follow Through: A child mishandling fireworks/safety is not typically a time for second chances. Follow through with consequences consistently around fireworks so that all children know that the rules are firm.
  • Supervision:  Never let children handle fireworks, including sparklers, without close adult supervision.
  • Water: Always make sure you have a bucket of water nearby in case of an emergency.

Handling Loud Noises

  • Ear Protection: Provide noise-canceling headphones or earplugs to protect sensitive ears.
  • Explain the Sounds: Prepare kids for the loud noises by explaining what causes them. You may want to give them a preview of what fireworks look and sound like by watching a video of a fireworks display online.
  • Create a Quiet Space: If able, have a designated quiet space where kids can retreat if they feel overwhelmed by the noise. Make sure that there is an adult that will be willing to go inside if needed.
  • Sleep: For younger children/babies, typically their bedtime is well before the end of fireworks being shot off. Consider either adding a sound machine or turning up their sound machine (lower the sound once fireworks are done).

Kid-Friendly Fireworks Alternatives

If your family is skipping out on fireworks this year, there are still some fun options to help create that special firework feeling. Check out some of these ideas below!

Calming Techniques

  • Comfort Items: If going away from your home to watch a fireworks show, bring along favorite toys or blankets to help comfort kids if they become anxious.
  • Stay Close: Keep young children close and offer hugs and reassurance if they seem scared.

Consider making your own 4th of July Traditions as a Family!
