QUESTION: How do I Prepare my Child for Overnight Camp?

Overnight camp allows kids to begin being independent and is great for bonding with other kids.

  • Start with a one or two-night camp.
  • Do some practice nights at a friend’s house or grandparents’ house.
  • Set your child up for success.
  • Read a book about going to camp.
  • Get them excited about the things they will be doing at camp.
  • Let them know they can call if they need to.
  • Avoid telling them you will come get them if they get homesick (this almost guarantees they will get homesick).
  • Allow them to help pack and talk about camp as you are packing.
