Summer is here, and it’s the perfect time to turn your backyard into a fun-filled paradise for your kids! With the right toys, your outdoor space can become a place where imaginations run wild and physical activity is a joy. Many kids naturally want to spend time outside. But, if you live in town and have an empty yard to play in, they may not last very long outside. Outside time is crucial for children’s healthy development. Read more about why we should be getting unplugged and outside more often. Create a space they can’t wait to play in!

Here are some of the best backyard toys that promise hours of entertainment and exercise for kids of all ages.

Bat and Ball Set

This classic backyard game is not only fun but great for children working on their hand-eye coordination! We love this one for younger kids and this set for older children.

Sandbox

Another true classic for backyard fun! A sandbox with some toys can keep children having fun all summer long. Some things to consider with a sandbox is placement in the yard (it will do some significant damage to the grass underneath), a cover (key for keeping out unwanted animal droppings and bugs), and how long you plan to have one (a turtle sandbox is a great first start, but you way want to consider a larger one if you have multiple children).

We do love a good turtle sandbox (with a lid!) for younger babies. For a larger box we recommend this one

Playhouse

There is something about playing with “big people” things that little ones just love! A playhouse is an opportunity for your child to explore their imagination and pretend all day long. We love this playhouse because of the extra features like a sink, a mailbox, and a plant holder!

If you want to invest in a high-quality wood playhouse, we love this one! It fits more than one child, has some great added features, and looks beautiful in your backyard.

Splash Pad

Water play on a hot day is magical for children! While we LOVE going to a splash pad or pool (check out all the options here if you live near the Sioux Falls area), having a simple one at home is a summer must! When you don’t want to leave the house, when someone is sick, or you don’t have all morning to spend at the splash pad pull your own out!

We love this splash pad! For splash pads it’s important to pay attention to the quality. While no splash pad is going to survive your child’s whole childhood, having one that lasts a few years is a plus!

Mud Kitchen

A mud kitchen is another great way for children to mimic the adults in their life! A mud kitchen allows children to create kitchen masterpieces outside. They can always work well as a sensory base (simply use sensory items over water/dirt/sand).

We love this mud kitchen you can order! If you are good with tools, they are also a great project to DIY! Make sure to order some mud kitchen accessories as well! Consider getting a set of silicone kitchen play toys. Easy to clean up is the key!

Balls

While this may seem simple, I have yet to meet a toddler who doesn’t love a good ball! Keep a kids soccer ball outside, a few balls to throw to each other, and even a big beach ball can lead to a good hour of fun!

Tree Saucer Swing

We love a classic swing for you kiddos! But, for your backyard we recommend a saucer swing. It’s not something they will have in the school playground and it’s perfect for both swinging, sitting, and even just laying down while you look up at the sky.

We like this saucer swing!

Stepping Stones

Stepping stones seem very simple…and maybe even a bit boring. But, if they are used well, can lead to hours of fun and physical exercise. They challenge a child’s balance and gross motor skills. Pick up a pack of stepping stones and use them in an obstacle course across your yard, play the ground is lava, or make a challenge course with them.

Water Toys

Get out the splash pad, and add in some water toys for an ultimate afternoon of fun! Water toys can be as simple as a bucket and some measuring cups from the kitchen, younger kids will love this! Add in some reusable water balloons, some simple squirt guns, and water blasters and your family will be set for a few hours.

Water Table

A water table is a must for summer fun if you have younger children! Instead of having some water fun in the bathroom sink-take the fun outside. Remember with a water table to dump the water and keep it clean if you have children who will end up getting some of the water table water in their mouths. We love this water table that has some super fun added play features.

Light Up Beach Balls

If you have a backyard pool, these light-up beach balls are an amazing addition! Even if you don’t have a pool, we love these. Kids love playing with balls, and once you add the light-up feature, it only gets better. If you have older children, these are great for any type of outdoor fun when it is a bit darker at night.

Fun all Summer Long!

Create a backyard that your children are excited to go play in! Challenge their imagination, encourage creative play, and keep them physically active all summer long. By making the backyard a fun place to go you give them outside time, less screen time, and more activity in their day. Plus, it’s fun for the parents too!
