In every issue of the ‘hood Magazine, we ask local experts questions that are helpful for our community! This Ask the Expert was printed in the July/August 2026 Issue of ‘hood. Check out the full digital issue at the link!

Question: How do I help my kids have better manners?

Manners classes at Miss Jaspers’ House start by remembering to smile. It may seem basic, but think about the contrast between smiling and complaining. Smiling makes it easier to stay positive, face challenges, and disagree respectfully. Study, model, and teach good behaviors. Here are some tips.

•Patience – delay a reaction, listen first, ask questions, offer a hug before a lecture

•Language – choose your words carefully, learn quality vocabulary, avoid slang and slander

•Emotional Intelligence – lead with empathy, own your mistakes, problem solve

•Respect –say, “OK!” when asked to do something, let others go first, keep unkind thoughts to yourself

AFTER SCHOOL ADVENTURES teaches manners to elementary students through real-life experiences. Share the journey!

Miss Jaspers’ House is an environment designed to draw out and develop creative and critical thinking, wonder and discovery, goal setting, problem solving, manners and virtue, all through practice and real life experiences. Children generate ideas, construct projects, plan outings, and take ownership of their experiences while working with a team. When we are able to view who we are, there is no limit to who we can become.

Halloween can lead to a whirlwind of excitement for kids! Here are some tips from Avera Children's for taming the Halloween candy monster.

The post Taming the Halloween Candy Monster appeared first on the 'hood magazine.

Sponsored by Avera Children’s

Head to our Fall Headquarters, sponsored by Avera Children’s, for more great fall and Halloween content!

Halloween is a whirlwind of excitement for kids. There are the costumes, carved pumpkins, spooky decorations and of course the joy of racing around the neighborhood gathering treats.

While kids are focused on what ends up in the trick-or-treat bag, parents are left with the dilemma of what to do with the mountain of candy that suddenly takes over the kitchen counter. How much candy is too much? Is it better to hide it, ration it or just eliminate the temptation altogether? The good news is that with a little planning, your family can enjoy the season without the sugar struggle.

Before racing door to door, consider if your little one is prepared to take part in the full festivities of Halloween night. Trick-or-treating is one of the most exciting parts of the holiday, but it can also be overwhelming for young children, especially those under age 5, who have difficulty differentiating what is real and what is pretend. If you think that going up to a stranger’s house will be too scary for your young child, stay home and let them pass out treats.

Set safety rules for children: watch for cars, walk only on the sidewalk and approach only houses whose lights are on. Make sure that any masks have a clear sightline for children to see where they are going,

Remember that the goal isn’t to fill every inch of the candy bag. A shorter outing can be just as much fun, especially for younger children who may tire easily. Watch for signs of a melt-down. Call it a night when your child begins to seem tired or stressed.

Use Halloween Candy to Enforce Habits

Parents have debated Halloween candy or how much to allow kids for ages. Whether your family follows a “no candy” rule or takes the free-for-all approach, here are tips for managing the candy monster as well as some fun alternatives to traditional Halloween treats.

Candy is high in sugar, and that ingredient can lead to a lack of focus and out-of-control behavior in some kids.

Some children may be more sugar-sensitive; for some, the excitement of the occasion itself may contribute to wild moods and activity. Regardless of how your child reacts, the American Dietetic Association says limiting kids’ intake of sugar is always a good idea. Yet a bigger issue remains: excess sugar can kill a kid’s appetite for healthier foods they need to grow.

On the behavioral side, some research suggests that when you completely forbid your child to have candy, they may develop a “deprived mentality” that causes them to crave candy – and overdo it – later. Sheltering kids from sweets and treats doesn’t teach them how to manage these temptations later in life.

In addition to discouraging unhealthy habits such as candy before bedtime, parents should pay attention to their own post-trick-or-treat routine. “Adults need to practice healthy food habits – model the behavior you want children to have as adults,” said Twila Perkinson, Avera Child Life Specialist. “If the kids see you wolf down six snack size candy bars, it’s hard for them to buy into lessons in moderation.”

What to Do With Candy After Trick-or-Treating

Most of the time, keep the candy out of sight, out of mind. Instead of putting that giant bowl of Halloween candy on the kitchen table where it is a temptation to everyone, bag it up and put in a cupboard.

Have the kids sort their candy (a good learning game!), then pick out their five favorite kinds to keep. This teaches “mindful eating”—making choices, limiting serving sizes, and savoring and enjoying your choices rather than gorging on as much as you are allowed.

If you are going to limit the candy, set the rules and make sure your kids understand and agree. If they can follow the rules, let them control the candy stash. If they can’t, parents will need to be in charge.

Decide how much candy is an acceptable amount for a day. Measure it on a kitchen food scale (a math lesson!). Put the daily amounts in sealed bags with the day or date written on them.

Halloween Candy Alternatives

If you’d rather avoid giving out candy this Halloween, there are a variety of fun and unique treats to offer trick-or-treaters. In addition to curbing the sugar intake, non-food treats promote inclusion for trick-or-treaters with foods allergies and other conditions. The Teal Pumpkin Project, a worldwide movement to promote non-allergen related treats for Halloween, offers several options to make sure every child can enjoy the holiday. Consider these non-food ideas:

Glow sticks

Stickers

Small crayon or marker packs

Play-Doh

Pencils

Small toys

Temporary tattoos

Memories last longer than candy

Even though kids may say candy is the best part of Halloween, what they truly enjoy is fun experiences and family traditions. Find balance with treats by setting reasonable limits and promoting non-food alternatives. Craft making, pumpkin carving and scary stories in the dark are all great ways to enjoy Halloween without the sugar crash.

As the summer winds down, we begin to think about the start of the school year. Getting ready for school and activities can be a strain on the family budget. Before the first day of school, review these budgeting tips to ease into the school year.

Spending Plan

Know what your monthly income and expenses are. If you do not regularly write out your budget, look at last month’s income and expenses. Calculate the amount of income you receive, including benefits (SNAP) as well as earned income. Categorize your expenses so you know how much you have spent on bills and flexible expenses (food, transportation, entertainment, clothing, etc.). Review the budget information. Does income equal expenses? Is there money left over?

Review Last Year’s Expenses

Make a list of school supplies, clothes, shoes, and activity registration fees that will need to be purchased or paid for. Review what you spent last year. This will give you a starting point for determining how much you will need to budget. Look at your spending plan. Do you need to spend less on flexible expenses next month? Having a plan will help you make confident decisions about spending.

Set a Spending Limit

Set an amount that you can spend on each child. Make a list of exactly what you need so you can resist the temptation of buying the extras that you see in the store.

Reuse

Once you have the list of supplies and clothes that are needed for the start of the school year, go through the items you currently have. Decide what can be reused this year and do not have to be replaced.

Look for Deals

When you start shopping, pay attention to the deals. If the items must be replaced throughout the year, consider buying in bulk. Plan to buy items as needed throughout the year for clothing items. Children grow, and retailers regularly have sales. Also, consider shopping at second-hand stores to get lower prices. Spread out your purchases by getting what you need now and waiting for sales or better deals later.

Having a budget for expenses can help ease the stress of deciding what to buy and how much to spend at the start of a school year.

Sponsored by The South Dakota Safety Council

The South Dakota Safety Council wants to remind parents that as students head back to the classroom, roadways become busier with school buses, young pedestrians, bicyclists, and parents navigating drop-off and pick-up lines. This increase in traffic makes it more important than ever for everyone to work together to keep children safe.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), school buses are among the safest vehicles on the road, but children remain at risk when boarding, exiting, and crossing streets near buses. The National Safety Council (NSC) also notes that the most dangerous times for students are before and after school when traffic is heaviest.

Drivers Play a Critical Role

Motorists should remain alert whenever traveling through neighborhoods, residential streets, and school zones. Children can be unpredictable, often crossing between parked cars or entering roadways unexpectedly.

To help keep students safe, drivers should:

Slow down and obey all posted school zone speed limits.

Watch carefully for children walking or riding bicycles, especially during arrival and dismissal times.

Never pass a stopped school bus displaying flashing red lights and an extended stop arm. In every state, drivers must stop under specific circumstances to protect children entering or exiting the bus.

Stop for crossing guards and school patrol officers directing traffic.

Never block crosswalks or double-park, which can force children into traffic and reduce visibility for everyone.

Leave plenty of space behind school buses. The 10-foot area surrounding a bus is considered the most dangerous zone for children.

Drivers should also eliminate distractions by putting away cell phones and focusing their full attention on the road.

Teaching Children Safe Walking Habits

Parents play an important role in helping children become safe pedestrians. Practicing the route to school and reinforcing basic safety habits can significantly reduce the risk of injury.

Children should be taught to:

Walk on sidewalks whenever possible. If no sidewalk is available, walk facing oncoming traffic.

Stop, look left, right, and left again before crossing any street, and continue looking while crossing.

Cross only at designated crosswalks or intersections.

Make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the roadway.

Never run into the street or cross between parked vehicles.

Stay alert and avoid distractions by putting away phones and removing headphones while walking near traffic.

Safety experts also recommend that children younger than 10 cross the street with an adult, as younger children often have difficulty judging vehicle speed and distance.

School Bus Safety Starts Before Boarding

School buses are designed with safety in mind, but students must follow proper procedures when getting on and off the bus.

Parents should remind children to:

Arrive at the bus stop at least five minutes before the scheduled pickup time.

Wait at least 10 feet—or about five giant steps—from the curb until the bus comes to a complete stop.

Board only after the driver signals it is safe.

Stay seated and face forward during the ride.

After exiting, walk at least 10 feet in front of the bus before crossing so the driver can clearly see them.

Look left, right, and left again before crossing the street.

Sharing the Road with Young Cyclists

Children riding bicycles often have difficulty judging traffic situations. Drivers should exercise extra caution by:

Allowing at least three feet of space when passing cyclists.

Checking mirrors carefully before opening vehicle doors.

Watching for bicycles emerging from driveways or behind parked cars.

Yielding appropriately when turning at intersections.

Set the Example

Children learn by watching the adults around them. Parents, caregivers, and drivers can reinforce safe habits by modeling responsible behavior.

Simple actions such as putting away phones while walking or driving, obeying traffic laws, yielding to pedestrians, and slowing down in school zones demonstrate the importance of safety and encourage children to do the same.

Pull out:

Pedestrians: Look up. Make eye contact. Use the crosswalk. Be Seen.
Drivers: Slow down. Say off the phone. Be Aware
Whether you are behind the wheel or on your feet, pedestrian safety starts with you.

A Shared Responsibility

Back-to-school season brings excitement for students and families, but it also requires increased awareness from everyone on the road. Whether driving, walking, biking, or riding the bus, following basic safety practices can help prevent injuries and save lives.

Pedestrian Safety Starts with You!

Pedestrian safety is an essential aspect of road safety that affects people of all ages. Every day, millions of individuals walk to school, work, shopping centers, parks, and other destinations. Walking is one of the most environmentally friendly and healthy modes of transportation, but it also exposes people to risks from traffic accidents. Ensuring pedestrian safety requires cooperation among pedestrians, drivers, urban planners, and government authorities. By understanding common hazards and adopting preventive measures, communities can create safer environments for everyone.

Pedestrian accidents are a significant concern worldwide. According to road safety reports, thousands of pedestrians lose their lives annually due to traffic-related incidents, while many more suffer serious injuries. These accidents often occur at intersections, crosswalks, and roads with heavy traffic. Factors such as distracted driving, speeding, poor road design, inadequate lighting, and pedestrian negligence contribute to these incidents. As urban populations continue to grow, the need for effective pedestrian safety measures becomes even more critical.

Pedestrian Awareness

One of the most important principles of pedestrian safety is awareness. Pedestrians must remain alert to their surroundings at all times. The increasing use of smartphones and other electronic devices has led to distracted walking, where individuals focus on their screens instead of monitoring traffic conditions. Listening to loud music through headphones can also reduce awareness of approaching vehicles. Pedestrians should avoid distractions and pay close attention when crossing streets or walking near traffic.

Using designated crossing areas is another key aspect of pedestrian safety. Crosswalks, pedestrian bridges, and traffic signals are designed to provide safe passage across roads. Pedestrians should always use these facilities whenever available. Crossing the street at random locations, commonly known as jaywalking, increases the likelihood of accidents because drivers may not expect pedestrians outside designated crossing zones. Waiting for the pedestrian signal and checking both directions before crossing can significantly reduce risks.

Children are among the most vulnerable road users. Due to their limited understanding of traffic rules and their smaller size, drivers may have difficulty noticing them. Parents and teachers play a crucial role in educating children about road safety. Children should be taught to look left, right, and left again before crossing a street, obey traffic signals, and avoid running into the roadway. School zones often have reduced speed limits and crossing guards to protect young pedestrians. These measures should be respected by both drivers and pedestrians.

Older adults also face unique challenges related to pedestrian safety. Aging can affect vision, hearing, mobility, and reaction times, making it more difficult to navigate busy roads safely. Longer crossing times at intersections, well-maintained sidewalks, and improved lighting can help older pedestrians move safely. Drivers should exercise extra caution when approaching areas frequently used by senior citizens.

Driver Responsibility

Drivers have a major responsibility in preventing pedestrian accidents. Motorists must remain attentive, obey speed limits, and yield the right of way when required. Speeding is particularly dangerous because it reduces the driver’s ability to stop quickly and increases the severity of injuries in the event of a collision. Distracted driving, especially texting while driving, has become a leading cause of accidents. By focusing fully on the road, drivers can identify pedestrians early and respond appropriately.

Infrastructure plays a significant role in pedestrian safety. Well-designed roads and walkways can greatly reduce the likelihood of accidents. Sidewalks provide dedicated spaces for pedestrians, separating them from moving vehicles. Crosswalks with clear markings, pedestrian islands, traffic calming measures, and adequate street lighting improve safety for road users. Urban planners and local governments should prioritize pedestrian-friendly designs when developing transportation systems.

Visibility is another important factor in pedestrian safety. Many accidents occur during nighttime or in poor weather conditions when visibility is reduced. Pedestrians can improve their visibility by wearing bright-colored or reflective clothing, especially when walking near roads after dark. Carrying a flashlight or using reflective accessories can further enhance safety. Drivers should also use headlights appropriately and remain vigilant in low-visibility conditions.

Community Awareness

Community education and awareness campaigns are effective tools for promoting pedestrian safety. Schools, workplaces, and local organizations can organize programs that teach road safety principles and encourage responsible behavior. Public awareness campaigns can remind drivers to slow down and watch for pedestrians while encouraging pedestrians to follow traffic regulations. Such initiatives foster a culture of safety and shared responsibility.

Technology is increasingly being used to improve pedestrian safety. Modern vehicles are often equipped with advanced safety features such as automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection systems, and collision warning systems. Smart traffic signals and surveillance systems can help monitor traffic patterns and improve safety at busy intersections. While technology offers valuable support, it should complement rather than replace responsible behavior from both drivers and pedestrians.

Governments also play an important role in enforcing traffic laws and implementing safety policies. Strict penalties for speeding, distracted driving, and failure to yield to pedestrians can discourage risky behaviors. Regular maintenance of roads, sidewalks, and traffic signals ensures that infrastructure remains safe and functional. Investment in pedestrian-friendly transportation networks contributes to healthier and more sustainable communities.

Pedestrian Safety Responsibility

Pedestrian safety is not solely the responsibility of one group; it requires collaboration from everyone who uses the road. Pedestrians must stay alert and follow traffic rules, drivers must operate vehicles responsibly, and authorities must provide safe infrastructure and effective enforcement. When all stakeholders work together, the number of pedestrian accidents can be significantly reduced.

Pedestrians: Look up. Make eye contact. Use the crosswalk. Be Seen.
Drivers: Slow down. Say off the phone. Be Aware
Whether you are behind the wheel or on your feet, pedestrian safety starts with you.

In conclusion, pedestrian safety is a vital component of public health and transportation systems. Safe walking environments encourage physical activity, reduce traffic congestion, and enhance the quality of life within communities. Through education, responsible behavior, improved infrastructure, technological advancements, and strong enforcement of traffic laws, society can create safer roads for pedestrians. Every life is valuable, and prioritizing pedestrian safety helps ensure that everyone can travel confidently and securely.

Sponsored by Solis Photography

When most people start planning their fall family photos, they immediately think about colorful trees and crowded parks. While those locations are beautiful, they are also the places where everyone else ends up. If you want photos that feel a little more unique and tell your family’s story in a different way, there are plenty of unexpected locations around Sioux Falls that make incredible backdrops.

As a photographer, I love finding places that create images that feel personal instead of looking like everyone else’s Christmas card. Here are some of my favorite unexpected locations for fall photos in and around Sioux Falls.

1. The Sioux Empire Fair

If your session happens while the fair is in town, the colorful rides, bright lights, food stands, and carnival games create a playful atmosphere that is impossible to recreate anywhere else. Cotton candy, ferris wheels, lemonade, and laughter make for photos that feel like memories instead of posed portraits.

Even outside of fair season, parts of the fairgrounds offer rustic barns, fences, open walkways, and interesting textures that work beautifully for families, couples, and seniors.

This location is especially perfect for families with young kids because they can play instead of worrying about sitting still.

2. Downtown Sioux Falls

Downtown Sioux Falls transforms during the fall. The streets are lined with color, storefronts are decorated for the season, and the brick buildings create a timeless backdrop that never goes out of style.

Instead of standing in a field, walk hand in hand down Phillips Avenue, stopping for coffee, browsing bookstores, or simply enjoying a Saturday afternoon together.

One of my favorite things about downtown is that every block looks different. In one session, you can capture historic brick architecture, modern murals, cozy alleyways, string lights, and vibrant fall colors without ever getting in your car.

3. Your Own Home

Some of the most meaningful photos you will ever own may never be taken anywhere famous.

Your home tells your family’s story better than any park ever could.

Think about baking pumpkin bread together, carving pumpkins on the front porch, decorating for Halloween, reading books under a cozy blanket, or roasting marshmallows in the backyard.

Children are naturally more comfortable at home, which often means genuine smiles instead of forced ones. Pets can also be included without worrying about unfamiliar surroundings.

Years from now, these photographs become more than portraits. They become memories of the place where your children grew up.

Lifestyle sessions at home create images that feel authentic because they actually are.

4. The Apple Orchard

Nothing says fall quite like an afternoon at an apple orchard.

Rows of apple trees provide beautiful depth, while baskets of freshly picked apples, wagons, pumpkins, and rustic barns instantly create a cozy autumn atmosphere.

Kids love exploring the orchard, which means they stay engaged throughout the session instead of asking when they can leave. Instead of posing for every photo, families naturally interact while picking apples, walking between the rows, and sharing treats.

The result is a gallery full of genuine moments rather than stiff smiles.

If you are planning an orchard session, weekday evenings are often less crowded and offer beautiful golden light. My favorite orchard is the Country Apple Orchard in Harrisburg, but remember you will have to ask for permission to shoot your session there.

5. A Local Pumpkin Patch

Pumpkin patches are often overlooked because people think they are only for children, but they make fantastic locations for families, couples, and even maternity sessions.

The vibrant orange pumpkins instantly add warmth to your images without relying entirely on changing leaves. Hay bales, wooden fences, corn mazes, tractors, and wagons all add visual interest while giving everyone something to interact with.

Children especially love exploring, climbing, and choosing their favorite pumpkins, which leads to authentic smiles throughout the session. Instead of asking kids to stand perfectly still, you simply let them be kids.

6. Your Family’s Favorite Tradition

The best location may not be a location at all.

Think about the traditions your family looks forward to every fall.

Maybe you visit the same ice cream shop every October before it closes for the season. Maybe you decorate your porch together every year. Maybe you attend Friday night football games, visit a farmers market, bake cinnamon rolls on Sunday mornings, or spend every weekend at Grandpa’s farm.

Those traditions become part of your family’s story.

Photographs are about preserving memories, not simply documenting what everyone looked like in matching sweaters.

When your session reflects something your family genuinely enjoys, your images become timeless because they represent who you are.

Choosing a Location That Fits Your Family

The perfect fall photo location is not always the one with the brightest leaves.

It is the place where your family feels comfortable, laughs naturally, and creates real memories together. Whether that is exploring Downtown Sioux Falls, spending an evening at the Sioux Empire Fair, picking apples at a local orchard, enjoying coffee together, decorating your own front porch, or visiting your favorite pumpkin patch, your photos will feel much more personal than another session in a crowded park.

Fall only lasts a few weeks each year, and those weeks fill up quickly. Choosing a location that reflects your family’s personality helps create photographs that you will love long after the leaves have fallen.

I only take 20 family sessions per year and my calendar just opened! Let’s find the best spot for your family photos this year!
